‘Shoplifters’ Review: Exploring the Meaning of Family

The movie personally felt like a puzzle, slowly disentangling itself while also leaving some for the audiences to construe. Kore-eda crafted a story about a deeply flawed family – but a family

nonetheless – in such a heartbreakingly realistic way while raising such an intriguing question: what a family truly means.

The slow-paced first half of the movie demands the audience to be patient while it gradually unravels the story behind each character and unconsciously, you find yourself being pulled into the story.

What I like about this movie is that it doesn’t explicitly try to make the audience feel or think a certain way. Instead, it invites the audience to understand where each character is coming from.

By the end of the movie, you’re gonna find yourself haunted with lingering questions, contemplations, and a mix of emotions as the revelation slowly sinks in.
